I’ll get straight to the point: How well do you know your ideal customer?
The ideal customer avatar is a very important topic for businesses (and personal branding), but most people don’t know exactly who they’re selling to. And it hurts the pocket!
Why is it so important to know your ideal customer? Because you can’t be everything to everyone. If you don’t know your ideal customer, your copy will be generic and limited and of no use to anyone. So, it won’t sell.
You need to dedicate your limited resources to the people you want to serve.
Knowing your ICA is driving better and more specific sales copy, it’ll lead to better results and more money in the bank account.
If you haven’t already, it’s time to ask yourself: Who am I for? Who am I selling to?
If you don’t know where to start, here’s a simple exercise.
Write down what these people have in common. List all relevant common characteristics, both demographic and psychographic. Think about these people’s belief system, the recurring thoughts that run through their minds, what keeps them up at night, and what worries them on a regular basis.
Understanding your ideal client psychologically is key to success. Otherwise, you may make noise, but they won’t hear you. Or they won’t think you are for them.
Give this person a name and a full identity, and if you like, take a picture of a face online or use a photo of an actual customer. The visual perception of a real person can make this exercise easier.
If you can’t figure out who your ideal customer is right away, don’t worry. It’s a process that takes time, and you can always add more details as you get to know yourself and your product better.
